With completion of the Chapter Book commencing much more rapidly than I expected, I think it’s time to start making a plan for test readers.
This is a book for the 8-12 reading level range. I am looking for at least five test readers, one each ages 8, 9, 10, 11, & 12. Boys or girls are fine, but keep in mind that the main character is a female, and the main secondary character is a female. There are a couple of key male characters, but the story does not revolve around them.
My test readers need to enjoy reading, and they themselves need to want to read this book. The main thing I am looking for from my test readers is whether or not they enjoy the book.
I am also interested in knowing (this will most likely come from the parents) whether there were few, some, or a lot of things the reader did not understand in the book (specific word meanings, contexts, etc.) As a mother, I prefer my children learn from what they read; so I am always delighted when they ask for help sounding out a word, looking up the definition of a word, or understanding the context of a phrase or idiom. So I try to write what I’d like my children to read, as far as difficulty goes. But I also don’t want the book to be more frustrating than entertaining and cause a child to give up on reading it.
If you have a child who loves to read and you think they would be interested in Beta reading this Chapter Book, and if you and they are willing to provide feedback such as I’ve outlined above, please contact me. (If you have trouble with the link, the email address is leigh(dot)michaels(at)authorleighmichaels(dot)com.) Please tell me in your email a little about your child, including their age and what she or he usually prefers to read, as well as what grade level they are currently reading at.
If your child falls outside the 8-12 range but 1) enjoys reading this type of books, and 2) expresses an interest in reading this book, please contact me. I will consider children outside the age range, especially if there isn’t enough interest within the range.
Also keep in mind I will need the Beta copies returned. If you are not local, I will include the postage-paid envelope for returning the copy.
As the manuscript is finalized and I prepare to hand out the Beta copies, I will contact those I have selected to participate.
Thanks in advance!
